Unseen inflation, rising prices, market crash, worldwide political unstability, new unheard deseases. Everything that currently happens is so bad that you don’t want to even get out of your bed. And then, on top of all this you have this other constant challenge in your head: FOMO.
I think there’s a problem in current society. The problem is called: 24/7 tech-enabled “I-want-everything-now-in-this-second” desire. I state that it creates FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) of the worst kind.
The challenge is that the more we learn about new tech things, the more we generate FOMO ourselves.
Tech everywhere, everywhere
This is something I have recognized as well. One of the main contributors to this dilemma - technology started it. No wonder people burnout. You should be constantly learning something new. Constantly engaging, being connected, focusing, delivering, reading, listening, travelling, notifications from Instagram, FB, TikTok … . Constantly in the fear that if you don’t do these, game’s over for you, your career, your fitness level, your friendships. Fear, that if you stop “learning technology” or something “new” you will become obsolete. You lose your job, end up living under the bridge. But the worst part is that when you fulfill you “next big” goal you end up even more down the spiral of FOMO. This is because the more you learn the more you understand that you don’t know.
Just simply do in your career “what you enjoy”
This “career, job” thing sits well into this FOMO thing as well. Specially in the tech space. They always advise that just do what you are “enjoying” or “interested” in doing? Easy to say, harder to do – right? What should define our happiness in our “work”? A Paycheck? Meaningful work helping world to prosper? Good collegues? Building our own next Web5-mindblowing-product & company?
Example from own life
I don’t have to go far down the road for example for this tendence. Lately I’ve been helping to organize great international event which is about biohacking & health optimization called Biohackers Summit. Overall, great event, people, keynotes & ideas about how to improve own wellbeing around topics of sleep, nutrition, physical & mental wellbeing. But what dominated even in this event? You guessed it - technology. Sure, there were lots of just a natural “hacks” & advices. But still…
Is it so that we, human beings, are not capable today to sleep without any devices or “supersmart #AI #ML #cloud #blockchain” -powered solutions? Have we really lost our capability to take the decision making into our hands? Maybe we just are comfortable staying in our comfort zone & outsource decision making to some other instances?
Wellbeing shouldn’t be a rocket science as our body knows exactly what it needs. At the end, it’s a surprisingly intelligent piece of art which has evolved & adapted over tens of thousands of years.
Three steps how I escape FOMO
If you have red to this point – I have a suggestion:
Turn off your devices, put into airplane-mode, whatever needed. Just put them aside
Write down all the things you have in your mind and forget about them (at least for the moment)
Go into nature & reset your mind
Just try to find positive things in your life in the moment, remember to chill-out & enjoy the life :)
